Two president-critical TV journalists in Georgia were publicly portrayed without being convicted with handcuffs and in cages. The trial, which had then generated great interest, filled the hall with civilian-clothed policemen, including 17 submachine guns.
Our lawyers were disturbed by loud talking. The European Court of Justice condemned multiple violations. The high-profile case was adopted throughout Europe, including in famous cases in Germany.
In a subsequent case, it confirmed unlawful detention without a valid court order, which could in future become a precedent for the police laws envisaged in Germany.
After winning several restitution cases of illegal communist expropriations (1921-1980) in Georgia in the final phase of the Shevardnadze regime up to 2003, the new Saakashvili government refused to implement some of these judgments. The European Court of Human Rights confirmed the violation of the law under despotism.
